Healthcare writing for consumers

For a few years, I wrote for Memorial Healthcare System (now Memorial Hermann Health System). In addition to profiles featuring particular physicians or pieces highlighting services affiliated with the system, I wrote a number of general interest stories in the vein of the "I'm Joe's Heart" articles from vintage Reader's Digest.

Here's an example of a consumer-focused piece about how the lymphatic system works, and another about how the brain works - each in simple language and about three pages.

I wrote this piece for the late, great Houston Metropolitan Magazine. I was a contributing editor - which meant I attended all editorial meetings, helped generate ideas for each issue, and wrote features monthly.

I had a lot of fun researching and writing this particular offbeat travel piece.

Cloud-based computing; accounting software

Innovergent is a dynamic and pathbreaking vendor of robust, customizable cloud-based accounting packages. The solutions they offer are affordable and ideally suited to the needs of both bootstrapping startups and more mature companies.

Startups often begin with inexpensive and simple accounting packages such as Quickbooks - only to find they've outgrown the solution before they even know it.

University of Texas Development Office

The University of Texas Development Office hired me to be both the editor of their flagship marketing communications piece and to conceive and oversee a stem-to-stern redesign and relaunch.

The publication showcased donors, donors' gifts, and inspiring people and activities around campus. Along with the opportunity to revamp the publication, I felt lucky to meet and interview some really wonderful people among UT's generous - and sometimes famous -donors.

I wrote this article about a new piece of equipment donors made possible for the geology department.
